3-Day gorilla trekking itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Morning: Pick-up from your hotel in Kampala/Entebbe or Kigali. The drive from Kampala/Entebbe is a long, 8–10 hour trip, so an early start (around 5:00 AM) is recommended.

Midday: Stop at the Equator for a photo opportunity if driving from Kampala. Have lunch in Mbarara or another town along the way.

Afternoon/Evening: Continue the journey, arriving at your lodge in one of Bwindi's four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo. Check in, relax, and prepare for the next day's trek.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking and cultural experience

Morning: After an early breakfast, travel to the park headquarters for a briefing by the Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. Trekking begins around 8:00 AM, though the duration and terrain vary based on the gorillas' location. The hike can last from 30 minutes to 8 hours.

Late Afternoon: Return to your lodge to relax after the strenuous trek.
Evening: Consider an optional Batwa cultural experience or a community walk to interact with the local Batwa Pygmy community and learn about their traditional way of life.

Day 3: Departure

Morning: After breakfast, check out of your accommodation.

Day: Begin your return journey to Kampala/Entebbe or Kigali, with lunch en route. You may stop at a local craft market or have an optional detour through Lake Mburo National Park to spot wildlife like zebras and impalas.

Evening: Arrive at your drop-off location or head to the airport for your departure flight.

Planning and booking

Permits: Gorilla permits are limited and should be booked several months in advance, especially during the peak season (June–August and December–February).

Transportation: While you can arrange transport independently, booking with a tour operator simplifies logistics like transfers and accommodations.

Time of year: While trekking is possible year-round, the driest months offer better conditions. The rainy seasons (March–May and October–November) can be more adventurous due to muddy, slippery trails but may offer discounted permits
